As it has been from the start, the more Barack Obama talks the
less approval people have of the job he is doing as president.
For a politician, especially in this historic moment of
political awakening, the word approval also speaks to
issues of trust, reliability, respectability and most
importantly -- credibility.

Part of the problem that Obama has created for himself is that
he has taken the normal cycle of political campaigning -- a
highly-anticipated prime time event when it fills its usual time
slot -- and has turned it into something that resembles one of
those cable network reality show marathons.
If you look forward to watching episodes of Billy the
Exterminator, the Pawn Stars or Cake Boss when
they appear within the context of their regular time slots, I
would discourage you from watching multiple reruns of your faves
during those "marathon" presentations. Not only will you become bored with what
you once found novel and stimulating, you will also begin to
notice plotted contrivances that the shows' producers concoct to
make the mundane a bit more dramatic and entertaining than
ordinary "reality" affords.
How
coincidental it is that Billy always encounters a venomous
snake
in
the roach-infested
pantry; that Buddy's beloved familia always throws the biggest monkey wrench into his complicated cake
creation countdowns; that Chumlee is allowed to diss
customers and the very pawn stars that overfeed him.
How
coincidental it is that your Dear Leader always has shills in
the audience to shout-out to during the formalities segments of
his shows and that he always has his sleeves rolled
up as if he had been working hard organizing something just prior
to the fundraiser. How coincidental that he always
concludes with his angriest, most blame-some, snake-fightin' reality show
finger pointing and smack talk.
At this point, mere days from the referendum on the cancellation
of his unreal reality show, most people exercise one of two options when Obama comes on TV. Either they grab the remote and cut him off
ASAP or they sit there laughing at his desperation as he tries
to get people to buy the same old bill of goods that they took a
pass on just yesterday. If only the comments from the home
audience could be incorporated into his program like reverse
shout-outs, his ratings might take an upward
turn.
As a result of over-exposure, even
a creative cake-maker's products would ultimately look mundane
if not for that masterpiece every now and then. Every
roach, wasp and mouse would ultimately look like every
other roach wasp and mouse if not for the shock and awe
of the occasional venomous snake or snapping alligator. Every pawn deal would
be pretty much like every other pawn deal if not for the
occasional priceless artifact at the center of the negotiation.
By comparison, however, every Obama lecture is exactly like the
one before it and the one before that. Predictably, even if he
were doing just a somewhat better job than reality tells us, his
ratings would continue to plummet. People won't continue to watch
reruns, especially when they are presented as a never-ending
marathon loop of the same old same old.
Who,
then, has exterminated the president's good ratings?
Obviously, it's none other than Barry himself. He used to
be the undisputed cake boss but he's on the verge of becoming
more of a pawn than pawn star.
