The Homeland Security picture is out of focus.              click here to subscribe to the eddobloggo RSS feed RSS feed

What's wrong with the homeland security picture? Obama and Janet Napolitano, for starters. We may have to wait awhile for the end of the poorly prioritized Obama administration, but it is certainly possible to put political pressure on the president to replace the Homeland Security Department secretary with someone far more qualified -- perhaps someone a bit more militant about protecting his/her fellow Americans -- at the earliest possible moment.

Pulitzer Prize-winning syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer said it best in making the case to get the current homeland security chief "out of the picture"...

What's wrong with this picture?

Just a couple of things.

Janet Napolitano -- former Arizona governor, now overmatched secretary of homeland security -- will forever be remembered for having said of the attempt to bring down an airliner over Detroit: "The system worked." The attacker’s concerned father had warned U.S. authorities about his son’s jihadist tendencies. The would-be bomber paid cash and checked no luggage on a transoceanic flight. He was nonetheless allowed to fly, and would have killed 288 people in the air alone, save for a faulty detonator and quick actions by a few passengers.

While Napolitano's you can't be serious! initial remark about the jockbomber incident was inappropriate and scary, at least her demeanor reflected a modicum of professionalism as compared with her Dear Leader's initial remarks about the Fort Hood Massacre.

“Let me first of all just thank Ken and the entire Department of the the Interior Staff for organizing just an extraordinary conference. Uh, I want to thank my cabinet members and senior administration officials who participated today. Uh, I hear that Dr. Joe “Medicine” Crow was around. So I want to give a shout out.  My understanding is, is that you uh had an extremely productive conference...”

After a full two minutes of this kind of surreal un-promptered joviality, the president finally got to the heartbreaking point: “We don’t yet know all the details at this moment. We will share them as we get them…We will make sure we get answers to every single question about this horrible incident…I hope all of you recognize the scope of this tragedy.”

Duh.  Who do you think was having trouble recognizing the "scope" of a jihadist's murderous attack at a military installation right in the heart of our homeland?

Meanwhile, Democrats have the audacity to accuse Republicans of going too far in their criticism of the Obama administration's handling of the attempted Christmas Day terror attack, the Fort Hood aftermath, and other recent threats and near-misses.  They contend that the GOP is blatantly exploiting the growing number of homeland security-related incidents to gain the upper hand in the 2010 midterm elections.

Michigan Rep. Pete Hoekstra referred to the failed airline bombing incident in a fundraising pitch for his gubernatorial campaign. Other GOP lawmakers have taken to radio and TV to criticize the administration's response to the incident and the failure to identify the suspect as a terror suspect in advance. Former Vice President Dick Cheney accused Obama of pretending the United States is not at war. Rep. Dan Burton of Indiana has called for Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to resign.

These additional recent events -- and others -- help support non-Democrats' claims that this administration has reverted to a pre-9/11 mentality...

  • Contacts between the cleric, Anwar al-Aulaqi, and the plane suspect are growing more apparent as investigators continue their probe. A US intelligence official said Thursday that "there was probably a face-to-face encounter" between Aulaqi and the suspect, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, during a stay in Yemen before the Nigerian man flew to Amsterdam and boarded Detroit-bound Northwest Airlines Flight 253.

  • There is a likely connection between the aforementioned Yemeni cleric (and/or others) and the Fort Hood shooter.

  • Inter-agency intelligence sharing failures.

  • The bomber who killed seven CIA employees at a remote outpost in southeastern Afghanistan had been invited onto the base and had not been searched, two former U.S. officials told The Associated Press on Thursday.

  • Attorney General Holder's "unilateral" decision to try 9/11 plotters as American citizens in New York City.

  • The closure of Gitmo and the return of some of its prisoners to Yemen and other jihadist hotbeds plus the re-incarceration of others at a shovel-ready federal prison near pork-laden Chicago.

Obama's failure to ramp-up homeland security, accept Janet Napolitano's resignation and modify his Gitmo and KSM trial plans trumps the public's mixed feelings about the rest of his free-spending socialistic agenda.  A single airline tragedy on the ground or in the sky insures significant non-Democrat success in the 2010 elections.

Getting the homeland security picture back in focus, therefore, should be a top priority, especially for Democrats.  The president should read, from his teleprompter, one of his most oft-made statements (usually spoken in regard to far less important "priorities") just once more before retiring it:  "This is an emergency that will become a catastrophe if we fail to act immediately."

But don't hold your breath. Democrats will be too busy pointing fingers at the rest of us to recognize the scope of this tragedy.

The democrats see everything through the lens of their out of focus political goggles. In their view, down is up and left is right. The urgency of now has caused them to lose track of their responsibility to those who they should be obliged to represent. At least the "party of no" has heard the American people and is trying to slow down the juggernaut of big government take over of our lives. Sometimes, less is more.

[NO is a definitive answer -- a decision. Don't expect too many of them (real decisions) from a coward who voted PRESENT in his first legislative job and showed up about 13 times for his last one. -ED]

Napolitano was a 'quota' appointment. Obama gave this most important job to a woman without any experience in any of the areas that Homeland Security deals with.

During the Ft Hood shooting Obama ordered her hidden so they could pretend that the major's assault wasn't a terrorist act. So when she finally spoke she gave a speech about how our borders were secured and we could start immigration reform. Now after the Nigerian attack on an airline she said the system worked and mainly spoke about how she had no opposition with TSA officers being unionized. As I said she is a political hack, nothing more.

If we continue to have terrorist acts committed against us then Obama will have to pay a price. After all W was blamed for everything negative that happened during his administration...why will it be any difference with Obama?

Well written article - to the point - I like that. I may throw left- handed but I'm RIGHT there with you all the way.

I personally think that POTUS has some form of mental illness! You would think after banging his head against a wall for so long that it would really feel good to stop! Apparently, in his case, he enjoys the pain.

Ed, why do you hate America?

[What I hate is what the evil-doers are doing to the America that I have always loved and for which I will work diligently to restore.  Are you one of them?  Is that why you're ashamed to identify yourself?  Or did you just not expect an honest answer because you never get one from a lefty? -ED]

Like Ron Paul said "has any one asked these guys why they want to blow themselves up?"

[Did he ask that question recently or decades ago when they started doing it in Israeli buses and pizzerias; when they made it abundantly clear that, in their religion, martyrdom gets them a guaranteed place in heaven with a harem of virgins?  RP needs to stick to economic issues. -ED]

The bomber that killed the 8 CIA agents in Afghanistan was let on base without being searched....a security checkpoint in Dallas/DFW was left UNATTENDED for over 90 minutes....Navy seals getting tried in a court of law...enemy combatants getting defended with your tax dollars.....???

the enemy is within....time to impeach obama and remove him and his administration

[You're absolutely right. But we will never have the ability to do what is needed if we don't seize the opportunity that will be presented this November. -ED]

I wonder how many of the incompetent employees of MANY agencies who FAILED to pass on info or the incompetent security guard in the Afghanistan gym where people were killed because he did not follow simple rules were hired and trained BEFORE Obama? Let's put blame where it belongs like we were all adults.

WesleyC

Salem, OR Statesman-Journal

Adults don't waste time worrying about blame.... they worry about today and plan for tomorrow. Or should we see how many were hired & trained under Clinton too? Like Truman's sign said, "the buck stops here". The person in the oval office IS responsible for everything that happens during their watch....:)>

Thank you [see WesleyC's comment above] for confirming that Clinton's chasing of interns instead of terrorists resulted in 9/11. For perhaps the millionth time if someone would come clean on what Berger stole from the National Archives to protect Clinton we will now just how careless and culpable he was. I agree with you completely.

Obama is becoming the biggest disappointment to the average citizens in a long time or maybe ever. He was voted in by these people and has done nothing to help any of them. How sad !!!

[The saddest part is that he continues, with the help of the skewed Congress, to push his socialist agenda despite the majority of Americans' opposition to it. Question: Are you safer and better off than you were a year ago kornfield kommies and nanny-staters?  Standard Answer:"Things are beginning to show signs of improvement."  Yeah right! -ED]

Good read Eddo. Perhaps the root cause of Democrats pointing fingers at conservative's ire over homeland security runs a little deeper than many understand or are willing to admit. Here's another good read: http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/jamescorum/100021061/how-leftist-peace-groups-are-helping-terrorists/

We have our own home-grown green/socialist/communist obfuscating on his blogs about the great struggle of the masses and the sins of the US, yet he and his sycophants fail to recognize the very tyranny that they support. If and when the next airliner is bombed or hijacked and flown into a building, expect from these folks a litany of excuses blaming the US and a complete pass given to the terrorists that the left supports. They certainly wouldn't want to talk about their own dirty linen.

I want the government to stay out of my life, no more of their interfering with my life, telling me what care to drive, what to heat and cool with, what foods to eat, how to educate my child no more saying Merry Christmas or if someone would say God Bless the liberals would have heart failure . The house the senate  and the president have the lowest approval rating for any administration is decades. they don't know what to do and they prove it everyday and certainly every time they open their mouths another lie pops out. And I am furious Pelosi used 3 planes to take her and her cronies to Copenhagen and guess who gets to pay for that luxury. This bunch of liberals are the worst people i have ever seen in my life they are power hungry and their ignorance is just a bit bigger than than their super egos.  And they lie every time they open their mouths someone needs to put this bunch in hibernation vote um out of office 2010 hopefully the conservatives will get in control and save our country before China owns us lock stock and barrel.

the Republican party has been hijacked by RINO's and a lot of true conservatives hace opted out...

the democratic party has been hijacked by socialist/marxist's and most have chosen to go along for the ride....

That left an open spot for the ideals espoused by most Americans....and the grassroots conservatives/t-baggers movement was born of necessity. Conservatives and Libertarians must unite to ensure the komrades are run out of Washington.

Good ole Janet "Incompitano" ! Just doing what she does best.

And that is...?...!....?... Ummmmmm....Oh ! I know !

Making sure that the general public knows, and clearly understands, "beyond any reasonable doubt" that she is an "incompetent fool" in regards to running the Department of Homeland Security !

Perhaps we should all start gathering up in groups across the U.S. to learn how to sing "kumbaya", in P.C. harmony, and in other languages too, so as to be fully prepared, and able, to thwart off any future Homicide Bomber and Terrorist attacks in U.S. Air Space, and on U.S. soil ?

That may be the only weapon we might have left in our arsenal to defend ourselves with after another year, or few years, of the P.C. Kumbaya people like Obama and Janet Incompitano !

I was told via the media and many bloggers that the world disliked George W Bush and as soon as he was gone life would be butterflies and unicorns. barak "bend over" obama has bowed and scraped his way around the world to no end. The hope and change thing just keeps on giving, or is it taking?

Well, at least the Blackwater guys were let off the hook by a federal judge so there might be hope when it comes down to a fire-fight in a place where we are hated.

[But this, too, is politically motivated. I hold to what I said in my rant and would add that there will be rather extensive posturing to make it appear that kommies actually care about terrorism and homeland security -- other than the legali$tic elements outside of the federal courts. -ED]

Let's see. A terrorist attack occurred while Obama was in office, so it must be all Obama's fault, right? So I assume you agree 9/11 was all Bush's fault? Right? Right?

ThinkTwicePlease

Wausau, WI Daily Herald

[GWB not only assumed responsibility but his administration implemented a plan that kept our homeland incident-free -- busting countless plots along the way -- for the remainder of his term. The big kommie kriticism has always been that he was overzealous in obtaining vital intelligence. An independent investigative commission came to the conclusion that previous administrations had ignored serious intelligence and homeland security lapses. Who knows what else they would have uncovered had Sandy Burglar not stuffed contraband classified documents in his shorts like a jockbomber?

The larger question is: Who will Obama blame for Ft. Hood, the jockbomber and, God forbid, the next incident? He certainly can't blame the "overzealous" former president, and if he takes responsibility for turning away from the successful practices of the Bush administration then you libs were wrong all along. Right? Right? -ED]

If you will look closely at Obama's track record on Islam, He has gone VERY soft on ANYTHING to do with Muslims. He always plays it down or delays or talks a lot but does NOTHING...where do you think his heart lays? If he is not a Muslim he is a Muslim sympathizer. The actions speak MUCH louder than his words...Do not expect a hard line from this Muslim...

Wow. Who was president on Sept. 11, 2001. It wasn't Obama. It wasn't Napolitano. If that had happened on Obama's watch the repubs would be calling for revolution. Y'all are two-faced and don't make much sense.

Anonymous

[You conveniently miss the point that the guys on whose watch 9/11 occurred devised a plan -- and stuck to it -- that was good enough to insure that it wouldn't happen again while they were on the scene.  Bush himself never laid the blame on Clinton but concentrated, instead, on insuring that his own mission would succeed. Among the things that Obama "inherited", he chose to ditch the most successful of Bush's strategies and is now reaping what he has sown while we are not being properly protected as per his oath of office.  Homeland security is the foremost responsibility of that office, so who's two-faced? -ED]
