No more turf wars?                                                              click here to subscribe to the eddobloggo RSS feedsubscribe via RSS

The anniversary of Hurricane Katrina's devastation presents an opportunity for "renewal" to Barack Obama.  It serves as a reminder that multiple states, the federal government and all of their participating agencies must always work together for the common good.

"No more turf wars," is the official Obamaspeak from yesterday's weekly radio address.  That means putting an end to the inter-agency rivalries and disconnects that could prevent the rapid deployment of emergency services during a post-Katrina disaster.  Obama's further implication is that we should learn from the mistakes made four years ago and avoid repeating them.

"Whole neighborhoods of a great American city were left in ruins...and many Americans questioned whether government could fulfill its responsibility to respond in a crisis."   For a change, that doesn't sound like the usual Saturday morning political rhetoric and Obamacare propaganda.

Obama always puts our money where his mouth is.You can always be certain that the president will put our money where his mouth is if given the chance.  However, there might actually be bi-partisan support for such a spending plan, if prudently constructed.  There is no arguing that a continued pre-8/29/05 mentality could lead to an even bigger episode of death and destruction during the next disaster.

Speaking of great American urban neighborhoods being left in ruins, another disaster anniversary is just around the corner.

In light of yesterday's speechlet about renewing prevention efforts and eliminating inter-agency turf wars you might assume that the president would take the same proactive approach to an equally important effort -- protecting the nation from another 9/11. Instead, the forthcoming anniversary of America's darkest day has been Obamaspoken into a National Day of Service and Remembrance

Not a word about renewing and redoubling our defense efforts.  Not a word of warning about the dangerous results of ignoring terrorism (the T-word, of course, was written out of the liberal lexicon months ago).  Not even a hint at the desire to unify every intelligence agency and armed force to insure that each of them is on precisely the same page in preventing a Category 5 terror storm.

Meanwhile, speaking of inter-agency turf wars, the ever more terrorist-protective Attorney General [in the words of Dick Cheney] is "out there threatening to disbar the lawyers who gave us the legal opinions [that legitimized aggressive interrogation of 9/11 plotters and their comrades] threatening, contrary to what the president originally said, that they're going to go out and investigate the CIA personnel who carried out those investigations."

This to the chagrin of the CIA Director, Leon Panetta, who himself has never been accused of being a neocon let alone a torturer.

In fact, Leon Panetta and Eric Holder worked for the same boss once before.  That was within the last administration with a pre-9/11 mentality.  Fortunately, at least one of these Clintonistas appears to have learned a lesson or two about keeping America safe since then.

"We had a track record of eight years defending the nation against any further Dick Cheney takes on Eric Holder and the double-speak of Barack Obama.mass casualty attacks from Al Qaeda," Cheney added during a Fox News interview with Chris Wallace aired this morning. "The approach of the Obama administration should be to come to those people who were involved in that policy and say, 'How did you do it? What were the keys to keeping this country safe over that period of time?'"  Don't hold your breath, Mr. Vice-President.

Instead, prepare for the Category 5 that is heading your way and for the devastation to our nation that it will leave in its wake.

You're just fear mongering. You know, like the people who don't want government health care who are saying it will be too expensive and will result in rationing, long waits for care, and control of your physical body. However, if we don't pass cap and trade the world will burn up, so let's get on that right away, if not by legislation, then trough the EPA. It appears to me one man's fear mongering is another man's clarion call to action.

Abbie Hoffman got arrested for wearing an American flag shirt.  Now conservatives use the American flag as a do-rag.

The Yippies also burned flags along with their draft cards.  BTW, my star-spangled bandana is a fotoshop figment -- I don't actually own one and have never worn a do-rag in my life.  Can you say c-a-r-t-o-o-n lefty? -ED]

Don't worry Eddo they will be asking those questions and many more like them inside a Court of Law. As for Cheney a Senate Hearing and Hell right after.

eddo, I agree, great post and yep, better hurry because I think real change (in Congress and the Senate) is about to occur and then the impeachment can commence.

I hope that you know that those of us that are "astroturf" are controlled by a "mob" mentality and are highly organized. I hope that you realize that this same "mob" is nothing but liars spreading mis-information and twisting the truth to dissuade people from seeking the truth. Obama knows he can do what he wants as he owns most of the government and news media anyway. so if another attack happens he will just blow it off as right wing propaganda and apologize to the attackers for the US making them mad.

Thanks for the humor, eddo. I always get a kick out of Cheney's "We had a track record of eight years defending the nation" catch-phrase.

He still likes to count ignoring multiple warnings from the CIA about an imminent attack from Al Qaeda in advance of 9/11 as "defending our nation."

[I'll assume you were there KR and that your "facts" are accurate. So I guess the Bush people learned from their earlier mistakes -- which is exactly why Cheney is correct in pointing out what they got right for 7+ years thereafter. I won't bore you with the full "those who ignore history" quote. -ED]

The "Yes We Can, Hope and Change" flood has wreaked a greater disaster than any hurricane or tornado.

Bush didn't make any mistakes, eddo, remember he was asked that? none, nada...

And as to the whole silly argument that he kept us safe for 7 and 1/2 years, post hoc ergo propter hoc.

[Once you mock his pronunciation of "nuclear" and take him to task for the aircraft carrier photo/op and the above-mentioned, you're pretty much out of bullets -- as compared to the Dear Leader's off-prompter gaffe-a-thon whenever the Obama-prompter isn't handy.  Plus what I've already said to KRidge. -ED]

After that Category 5 hits, America will lay a Category 5 on those in power, literally. The pot will have boiled over.

"So we lower ourselves to the level of terrorists? What does that make us?"

Now that we've got the Saturday morning cartoon moral out of the way; how about "the victors"? And torturing terrorists is nothing compared to telling a twelve year old kid to strap on a bomb and walk down to the mall.

eddo...great blog. The hardcore liberals and progressives are drooling like mad with the thought of imprisoning all the heathen republicans. They cannot control the thought of creating a norm, where the new administration does political witch hunts to "punish" the party forced out of power. I see visions of second and third world government policy in the US.

The real change is that Obama et.al. feel that if we radically cut our defenses, our military, our intelligence infrastructure, etc. that the terrorist and rogue nations will decide to play nicely with America, and not use our weakness to their advantage. A tiny minority of progressive Washington elites are playing Russian Roulette with American lives, and they are the ones that are safe in hardened federal buildings. The history books (not in this country, but in many) will be the real judge of how cutting our defense strengthened or weakened our country.

FDR said "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself".  Ronald Reagan said "In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem."

(OK, now think of foreign policy) The elites of BOTH parties seek to use fear to control and subdue the general population. Soon we may have to decide if the foreign terrorists are more or less of a threat than the domestic terrorists in Washington.

[Yours is a "bit too fair" assessment. Whereas the tactics you accurately portray may have been used in the past, the current administration is actually comprised of individuals -- from the prez and the AG on down -- who have a history of defending and befriending terrorists. -ED]

The point is that the reasons terrorists come to attack US interests is largely due to US policy around the world, not because they are evil maniacal killers. If we left them alone, there would be no reason for them to attack US interests, but because we involve ourselves in virtually every country and their business in the world, it's reasonable to assume that some people would dislike that with a passion and feel compelled to do something about it. The issue isn't how to defend us, it's how to avoid attacks in the first place.

[While there is a fractional element of truth in your left-ideological statement, if we stopped doing the things that bug these poor misunderstood pious religious folks TODAY without embracing Islam they would still be out to eliminate us for being infidels.  So even IF you're 100% right, I'd rather err on the side of safety -- ours not theirs. -ED]

As 'The Anointed One's' numbers fall and Dick Cheney's numbers rise, it gives one pause to reflect - we will be OK in three more years if we can wait that long...
